The Golden Age

While rereading "The Game" by Ken Dryden I came upon a quote I always liked and is so true.

"Nothing is as good as it used to be, and it never was. The "Golden Age" of sports," the "Golden Age"of anything, is the age of everyone's childhood."

John Carter

I grew up reading the John Carter books by Edgar Rice Burroughs.  (Along with Tarzan and most other works he produced.) I read the comics. Hell, I even played the strategy board game. So when I heard a movie came out I was excited. Life kept me busy and I never got to watch it until two nights ago.

I had heard the critics panned it. No one I knew had actually seen it. I figured what the hell. DL and watch it.

It wasn't that bad. It wasn't a great movie. It was disappointing in many ways. Yet it wasn't that bad. Not as bad a the critics made it out to be. My main problems with it;

It changed the initial book/story too much.

The Tharks didn't look muscular or tall enough.

The tattoos instead of armbands/jewelry.

Little things like that.

Overall, it is worth watching if you don't have anything to better to do.

Kitchen Confidential

I FINALLY found a copy of Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential at the used book store. Funny thing is I was looking for some Steven Brust, they had none I don't already own. On the way out I just happened to glance at a shelf by the exit and KC jumped out at me.

I am almost half done it already. It is hard to put it down once you start. :)

Go The Fuck To Sleep

A friend put a link up on Facebook about an audio book. It was "Go The Fuck To Sleep" read by Samuel L. Jackson. It is some seriously funny shit. :)

Almost as funny is the way the Christian Group Family First reacted. They lobbied to have book sellers in New Zealand not carry the book. They just can't seem to grasp that the book is aimed at adults not kids. I wonder if the sequel book will be aimed at idiots like them and called "Shut The Fuck Up".
